Exercise is the New Primary Prescription for Those with Mental Health Problems
Exercise can do so much for the body, mind and soul. A recent study has shown that exercise is very good at improving symptoms of anxiety and depression to schizophrenia. By exercising daily, it can reduce the amount of prescription medication that people with mental health issues need to take. The exercising does not have to be long or tough, it can be simple activities like jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, gardening or dancing for at least 30-minutes a day. All these exercises help to improve your mood by getting the blood circulation to your brain and increasing your energy levels.
David Tomasi, a lecturer at the University or Vermont, states that “The general attitude of medicine is that you treat the primary problem first, and exercise was never considered to be a life or death treatment option. Now that we know it’s so effective, it can become as fundamental as pharmacological intervention.”
Tomasi, Gates and Reyns found that an average of 95% of mental health patients said their moods improved after doing an exercise. Out of those people, 91.8% said they were delighted with the way their bodies felt and looked after the workout.
